Volunteer Eucharistic minister Agnes Cassidy says she sometimes shocks patients when visiting them on her rounds at the St. Luke’s campus of California Pacific Medical Center. “I might be talking to a patient who says that they are in their 70’s or 80’s and can’t do this or that anymore,” she says. “ I ask them how old they think I am, and many of them are very shocked to hear that I am 100 years old." Why Volunteer?

Patients and their families are not the only ones who benefit from compassionate volunteer services.

Volunteers who give of themselves also receive much in return – such as enjoying the satisfaction of a job well-done … feeling connected to the people you serve … establishing gratifying friendships … learning valuable teamwork skills … exploring career choices within the health care profession … and much more.

Despite the the pressures and pace of everyday life, thousands of men and women celebrate volunteerism and are taking the time to reach out to others.
